She is a wonderful person and a great friend. She is a fabulous photographer and a whole lot of fun. If only I didn't have to work so much.

Gender and Health Insurance

The new health care proposals all talk about not charging more based upon gender (which is equivelant to saying the insurers can't charge women more than men). This is very noble, however, people don't discuss the unintended consequences of such a decision.

It is well known in the actuarial world that woman utilize healthcare more than men, for various reasons (including prenatal care). A profit maximizing health insurance company will do what it takes to continue making profits. If they are no longer able to make risk assessments based upon gender, then the only option is to raise the premiums of the male gender to equal those of the female gender. It will become cheaper for females to be insured.

Insurance companies are in the business of making money, not providing equal rights. I'm not advocating for or against this discrimination, I'm just trying to start a dialogue that, in my opinion, has roughly been ignored.

Men, say goodbye to $45 a month insurance.

One of my nurses (Danielle Browning) in West Frankfort gave me a nickname I've never had before, and trust me, with my last name I've had plenty. I'm now to be affectionately referred to as Dr. Gallbladder.

That was a classic move on Russell's part. The Galu tribe was outwitted on that one. All it takes is for Shambo to cross over and there is a tie. I'm so glad I've been watching this season.

Brandon "caught in moment" Spikes

For those that missed it, Florida's Brandon Spikes was "caught up in the moment" according to coach urban meyer when Spikes decided to do some eye gouging: eye gouge video

when I watch this, sure it seems bad and looks terrible. A lot of people are griping about this player doing this, as they should. The real tragedy, though, is that Coach Meyer suspended this player for 30 minutes of their game on Saturday agaisnt perrenial national title contender Vanderbilt (sorry, VanWyck, I had to take a jab. At least they have a cool burn center with the awesome Dr Jeffery Guy of famed podcast ICU Rounds).

So, there you have it. In an opportune moment to teach this student-athlete responsibility, Meyer missed the boat. I wonder if Meyer was going to throw this under the rug, but ended up not being able to because of the public outcry?

When the Oregon/Boise State thuggery went down, a huge penalty was levied. I bet that player learned a huge lesson each and every day he saw his team play and he had to watch from the sidelines (I personally feel he should be allowed to play again if he has had good behavior).

Too bad Urban Meyer appears to not be placing as much teaching in his role as compared to winning. This is still, supposedly, the sport of the amateur.
